Here’s a collection of local memories and recollections of “The Brickie” and our local area, kindly provided by (current and former) residents:

1940s "large general store in Market Square was bombed... local Mums over there recovering molten bars of soap..."

1940s: Rubbish from derelict bomb sites ... always steaming hot.. Before this my Grandad used to work in the Brick pit, building bricks

1941-59: a tip for industrial and household rubbish, was an irresistible adventure playground

1948: "My time at Raglan Road school .... A group of us would regularly scale the railings at night to swim naked in the large pool of the lido"

1950s - horse drawn rubbish cart... we would run out – without the driving spotting us – and hang on the back of the cart up the hill

1941-9: one of the ARP wardens approached us boys. He told us “For God’s sake don’t do what I’m going to do”

1960s football practise - "Imagine the consequences of a slide tackle over broken glass..."

1960s... "The brickfield was already a grassed playing field when I moved here in 1959, but the lady down the road ... 8 years earlier remembered it being grassed over... Raglan school used to have their sports day on the brickfield"
